agapito flores -- an URBAN LEGEND!!??
i am watching the correspondents now on abs-cbn, and their feature is on the veracity of our claims that indeed agapito flores invented the fluorescent lamp. grabe to, kase since gradeschool, eto na yung alam naten that a filipino by the name of agapito flores invented the fluorescent lamp. and hello, super proud kaya tayo about it.
but it turns out, there are no historical facts that would support our claims. even g.e. doesn't acknowledge mr. flores. so every bit of pride that we have of him, is just a HOAX. as manuel quezon iii(a national historian, and president quezon's apo) put it, he was just an URBAN LEGEND!
SAD!

Totoo ba to? And to think i wrote an article mentioning him. Ganon??!!!! non-existent ang mamang ito? Eh ako rin sa school tinuro yon. You mean our teachers didn't know it also? Hala pag ganyan, parang ang tanong eh, how many percent nung alam natin na tinuro sa school ang factual at alin ang urban legend?
Nakakalungkot naman pong isipin na product of a rich imagination lang yon at maaaring marami pang ibang bagay...sigh.....
All these years...nobody saw the error until the correspondents featured it...i shudder to think that if what they're claiming is true, that it is indeed a hoax, what other kinds of lies are we all made to believe?
this is quite alarming, our historical studies is now...in doubt...

true! a lot of our supposedly text books bore a good sprinkling of untruths lalo na sa history...Buti na lang, one of my HS teachers warned me not to believe all that I read in the texts! we need to develop critical thinking sa mga students ngayon...
I think it would still fall on the vigilance of the academe to screen materials used in schools, verify their accuracy...etc etc. Kasi ang mga kids very impressionable. Eh kung mismong teacher di alam yon? It is no wonder also that we are left behind sa academic standing kasi simple facts we can't get straight...
and eto kamo, si jose rizal daw, hindi din totoo, joke joke joke!
Bleh, I've doubted the agapito flores story since I was 12. I always wondered how an ordinary person could a) isolate inert gases and b) stuff them in a vaccuum tube IN THE COMFORTS OF HOME.
Unbelievable.
um322di ko man napanood feature ng The Corespondents but i'm glad nalinawan na ang hoax kung sino nga ba inventor the fluorescent lamp... elementary ako nang tinuro yan ng teacher namin... eh dahil nga bata pa ako nun, and since spoonfed pa kadalasan ang pagtuturo nun, siyempre paniwalang paniwala ako nun... besides andun na rin kasi yung "sense of wonder" and pride kasi nga kapwa filipino kuno... pero nung high school dun na ako nagduda... kasi FLUORESCENT came from the idea na nago'glow yung fluorescent material coated sa loob ng tubo, kumbaga yun ang derivation ng name... siguro ginawa na lang nilang Flores yung inventor kuno para mas deceiving...
